Seed-carrying and feeding behavior of Jadera choprai Göllner-Scheiding (Heteroptera: Rhopalidae) Neotropical Entomology
PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R.; HIROSE,EDSON.
During February-March 2001, the seed-carrying and feeeding behavior on Cardiospermum halicacabum (L.) (Sapindaceae) by Jadera choprai Göllner-Scheiding was studied. Field observations indicated that the bugs feed on seeds found on the ground. Laboratory studies indicated that J. choprai may carry seeds 200 cm from where they were found. Several individuals were observed feeding on one seed, with the occurrence of cannibalism. Apparently, this is the first record on the association of J. choprai with C. halicacabum, and on seed-carrying by this rhopalid.

Stink bugs on soybean in northeastern Brazil and a new record on the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R..
During March-April 2001, a survey of pentatomids associated with soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] was conducted at northeastern Brazil (Balsas County – Maranhão State - latitude 7°31'S, longitude 46°02'W). The majority of the phytophagous bugs (82.4%) belonged to the species Euschistus heros (F.). Other six species of bugs were collected in much lower numbers (<5.0%). Among them, the exotic species, Nezara viridula (L.), was intercepted in this area for the first time, expanding its distribution in the Neotropical Region.

The Environmental Effects of Genetically Modified Crops Resistant to Insects Neotropical Entomology
FONTES,ELIANA M.G.; PIRES,CARMEN S.S.; SUJII,EDISON R.; PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R..
Transgenic crops are currently being cultivated on a commercial scale in many countries. The area devoted to transgenic pest resistant varieties worldwide reached 13 million hectares in 2001. These varieties offer valuable benefits but also pose potential risks. Assessments of their impact on the environment are conducted before they are approved for commercial use, as required by the regulatory biosafety frameworks. In this review, we discuss the potential ecological consequences of the commercial use in agriculture of genetically modified insect resistant crops. We also discuss the impacts caused by the change in agricultural practices, and attempt to identify gaps and possible opportunities for research, considering this new technological tool. We based...

Two New Morphs of the Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), in Brazil Neotropical Entomology
VIVAN,LÚCIA M.; PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R..
During March-June 2001, surveys of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), were conducted on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] fields in the Southern Region of Brazil. Colonies of the bug were maintained in the laboratory at Embrapa Soja in Londrina, PR. Two new morphs of N. viridula were obtained. The first, green-yellowish, was captured in the field in the Londrina area. The second, with the anterior margins of the pronotum and head yellow, with the rest of the body green-yellowish, was obtained in the laboratory.

Unusual Oviposition Behavior by a Seed Feeding Bug (Heteroptera: Rhopalidae) Neotropical Entomology
PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R.; HIROSE,EDSON; CHOCOROSQUI,VIVIANE R..
Jadera choprai Göllner-Scheiding (Heteroptera: Rhopalidae) feeds on the ground on mature seeds of Cardiospermum halicacabum (L.) (Sapindaceae). Laboratory observations indicated that females dug a hole of ca. 0.5 cm in the the soil with the forelegs, laid eggs, and covered them with lose soil. In artificial conditions, females buried the eggs in over 60 % of the ovipositions, and nymphs were able to reach the soil surface from eggs buried 4 cm. This oviposition behavior is rare among seed suckers heteropterans, that usually oviposit on host plants.

Unusual Oviposition on the Body of Conspecifics by Phytophagous Heteropterans Neotropical Entomology
PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R.; SANTOS,CLAUDIA H..
During March 2000 and February-March 2001, the oviposition behavior on the body of conspecifics by the pentatomid Euschistus heros (F.) and by the alydid Neomegalotomus parvus (West.) was studied. This behavior, uncommon for the species, was observed while maintaining rearing colonies in the laboratory. Apparently, this is the first record of oviposition on conspecifics by these two species of bugs in the laboratory.
